Courthouse tour: Boise, ID
Just a note that I will be doing a tour of the old Ada County Courthouse in Boise, ID on Monday Dec 10. Local preservationists have long fought to preserve the building, built as a WPA project between 1938 and 1941.
Most recently, the Idaho legislature has taken up temporary residence in the building, and at least one of the controversies surrounding the facility is a mural depicting the lynching of a Native American. As an historian, I have recommended authoring interpretive panels and preserving the murals in situ, as part of the historical record.
The interpretive panels are finally coming to pass, and Monday four of Idaho's five tribes, will join me on a tour of the courthouse to view the murals, and come up with an interpretive plan for them.
If anyone has worked with WPA art somewhere around the USA, I'd like to hear about it.
